How the photo calorie calculator works
Recognise. An AI vision model identifies each food on the plate, including mixed Indian plates with several items.
Estimate portions. It judges the size of each item from the photo, using everyday references such as a standard katori or a dinner plate.
Calculate. It converts each portion into calories, protein, carbs and fat, and adds them up.
The same scanner powers the Calo AI app, where you can correct any result by voice or text and save it to your daily log.
Tips for a better estimate
Shoot from above, in good light, with the whole plate in frame.
Keep a known object in view, such as a spoon or your hand, so the portion size is easier to judge.
Say what the camera cannot see: "made with 2 tbsp oil", "with ghee", "full fat milk". Hidden fat is the biggest source of error in Indian cooking.
Count pieces in the description when they overlap: "3 idlis", "2 rotis".
Photo or calorie guide?
For a single food you eat often, our Indian food calorie guide gives exact numbers per piece, katori and 100 g. For a full plate or a restaurant meal, a photo is far quicker than looking up each item.
Frequently asked questions
Is the photo calorie calculator free?
Yes. Sign in with Google (free, no card) and scan as many meals as you like within a generous daily limit. The same scanner is in the free Calo AI app.
How accurate is calorie counting from a photo?
It is an estimate. Recognising the dish is usually easy; judging portion size and hidden oil or ghee from a single photo is the hard part for any system. Adding a short description such as "2 rotis with 1 tsp ghee, 1 katori dal" makes results noticeably better. Read more in are AI calorie trackers accurate.
Does it work for Indian food?
Yes. It is built to recognise home-cooked Indian meals, including thalis with several items, and estimates each item separately.
Do you keep my photo?
No. On this page the photo is uploaded only for the analysis and deleted straight after. If you use the app or web app to log meals, your photos are stored in your own account so you can see your history.
Why do I need to sign in?
Each scan runs an AI model, and signing in lets us offer it free while preventing automated abuse. It also means your scans can carry over to the app.
