The Best Free MyFitnessPal Alternative for Indian Food

Short answer: MyFitnessPal's free plan is solid for manual logging, but Meal Scan, the barcode scanner, intermittent fasting, ad-free use and data export are Premium features. Calo AI is a free alternative with photo, voice and text logging and meal plans built on your own country's dishes, paid for by ads instead of a subscription.

If you want a free MyFitnessPal alternative with photo logging and Indian meal plans, Calo AI gives you AI photo scanning, voice and text logging and an AI coach at no cost on Android and the web. MyFitnessPal’s free plan covers manual food logging well, but Meal Scan, the barcode scanner, intermittent fasting and data export all need Premium.

Disclosure: this page is written by the Calo AI Team, and Calo AI is our app. Every MyFitnessPal fact below comes from MyFitnessPal’s own help centre and app store listings, checked on 1 October 2026.

What do you get with MyFitnessPal free vs Premium?

MyFitnessPal sums it up itself: “Free gets you logging. Premium adds the insights. Premium+ plans the meals and builds the grocery list.” Its help centre comparison table breaks that down:

  • Free: food and exercise logging, logging measurements and viewing past progress, creating foods, meals and recipes, viewing macronutrients, setting calorie and macro goals by percentage, sharing your diary, linking partner apps and a printable report.
  • Premium: everything in Free plus ad-free use, the barcode scanner, Meal Scan, voice logging, intermittent fasting, macros by gram, different goals by day, calorie goals by meal, food analysis, data export, net carbs and more.
  • Premium+: everything in Premium plus the Meal Plan Builder, meal prep mode, diet preferences and grocery lists.

Note that the barcode scanner sits in the Premium column of the current comparison table, so free users log packaged food by searching instead. The Google Play listing also shows a “Contains ads” label, and Premium removes the ads.

How much does MyFitnessPal Premium cost in India?

MyFitnessPal’s help centre says pricing varies by country and plan length. In India, the store listings showed these prices on 1 October 2026:

  • Google Play India: in-app purchases from ₹100 to ₹10,200 per item.
  • App Store India: several Premium items, including “MyFitnessPal Monthly Premium” at ₹619 and ₹1,699, and “MyFitnessPal Yearly Premium” at ₹3,099 and ₹6,700.

The price shown in the app when you upgrade is the one that applies. MyFitnessPal’s App Store description also mentions a free Premium trial.

Is MyFitnessPal good for Indian food?

It can work, but you need to be careful. MyFitnessPal says its database is “a combination of foods added by MyFitnessPal” and “foods that are added by our users”. It adds a check mark to entries it has reviewed or added, and says entries without a check mark are not always wrong. Its help centre also admits that some user entries “may be inaccurate or incomplete”, and that editing an entry effectively creates a new food item. So for a home-style dish like dal, pick check-marked items where you can, or compare against a trusted source like our calories in dal page.

Some features are also limited by language or country. The help centre lists Meal Scan as available only in English, Net Carbs only in the US and Canada, and Recipe Discovery only in the US for English users. Hindi is not among the 20 languages on its App Store listing.

Calo AI takes a different approach. You photograph or describe the meal, and your meal plan uses dishes from your own country’s cuisine, so Indian users get Indian meals. The app is available in Hindi. Photo results are estimates, and portion size is the hardest part, so describing the dish (“one katori rajma, two roti”) or correcting by voice or text gives a closer number. Our guide to counting calories in Indian food explains how to estimate portions.

Why choose Calo AI instead?

Calo AI gives you, free of charge:

  • AI photo meal scanning, plus voice and text logging.
  • Personalised meal plans using dishes from your own country’s cuisine.
  • An AI nutrition coach.
  • An intermittent fasting timer with plans from 12:12 to 20:4. Our intermittent fasting calculator helps you pick a window.
  • Weight and macro analytics, and step tracking.

The trade-off is ads, including an ad before each meal scan, and a short timer between AI coach messages. Premium removes both but does not unlock extra features. Calorie targets use the revised Harris-Benedict equation with a 250, 500 or 750 kcal deficit and a floor of 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men, and protein is set at 2.0 g per kg when losing or gaining weight.

When is MyFitnessPal the better choice?

MyFitnessPal is one of the most widely used calorie apps, with more than 100 million downloads on Google Play, and for some people it is still the right choice. It is probably the better pick if:

  • You prefer searching a huge food database and logging by hand rather than by photo.
  • You eat a lot of packaged food and are happy to pay for the barcode scanner.
  • You want a full website as well as apps. MyFitnessPal Premium covers Android, iPhone and the web with one subscription.
  • You use many devices and apps. Its App Store description says it connects with more than 40 apps and devices, including Wear OS.
  • You want Premium+ meal planning with grocery lists.

How do you switch from MyFitnessPal to Calo AI?

  1. Export your data if you can. MyFitnessPal’s help centre says Data Export is available to Premium and Premium+ subscribers and arrives by email as CSV files. Free users can print a report or share their diary instead.
  2. Cancel Premium renewal in the store where you bought it (Google Play, the App Store or the MyFitnessPal website). Your logs stay in your MyFitnessPal account if you go back to Free.
  3. Install Calo AI from Google Play, or open the web app on any phone or computer.
  4. Set up your profile so Calo AI can calculate your calorie and protein targets.
  5. Log your next meal by photo, then adjust it by voice or text if anything looks off.

A note on safety: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or have diabetes, PCOS, kidney disease or a history of eating disorders, speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before following a calorie target from any app. Real results vary from person to person.
