On Wegovy, the best approach is small, protein-first meals built from lean, minimally processed foods such as eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, chicken, tofu, beans, vegetables and fruit, plus steady fluids and gradually increasing fiber. Large, greasy or fried meals, very sweet foods and alcohol are the main things to limit, because they often make semaglutide’s stomach side effects worse.
This is general nutrition information, not medical advice. Your prescriber manages your medicine and dose, and a registered dietitian can personalize your plan. Never stop or change a dose on your own.
How does Wegovy change the way you eat?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It reduces appetite, and the FDA prescribing information states that it delays gastric emptying, so food leaves your stomach more slowly. You fill up sooner, and rich meals can sit heavily.
Stomach side effects are the most common reactions. In the adult weight-management trials summarized in the FDA label:
| Side effect | Wegovy | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea | 44% | 16% |
| Diarrhea | 30% | 16% |
| Vomiting | 24% | 6% |
| Constipation | 24% | 11% |
| Abdominal pain | 20% | 10% |
In the STEP 1 trial, adults on Wegovy lost an average of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo, alongside lifestyle support (Wilding et al., 2021). Results vary a lot between people, and food choices affect how comfortable the journey is.
What should I eat on Wegovy?
Put protein at the center of every meal. The 2025 joint advisory on nutrition for GLP-1 users, from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association and The Obesity Society, explains why: in STEP 1, of the average 13.6 kg (about 30 lb) lost in the body composition group, 8.3 kg (62%) was fat and 5.3 kg (38%) was lean body mass.
Adequate protein plus strength training is the advisory’s main strategy for protecting muscle. Easy protein foods, from USDA FoodData Central:
| Food | Serving | Protein | Calories | FDC ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greek yogurt, plain, nonfat | 6 oz (170 g) | 17.3 g | 100 | 170894 |
| Egg, whole | 1 large (50 g) | 6.3 g | 72 | 171287 |
| Salmon, Atlantic, farmed, cooked | 3 oz (85 g) | 18.8 g | 175 | 175168 |
| Ground turkey, 93% lean, cooked | 3 oz (85 g) | 23.0 g | 181 | 172851 |
| Edamame, prepared | 1 cup (155 g) | 18.5 g | 188 | 168411 |
| Black beans, cooked | 1 cup (172 g) | 15.2 g | 227 | 173735 |
Fill the rest of the plate with vegetables, fruit and whole grains in amounts you can finish comfortably. Use the protein calculator to find your range.
What foods should I avoid on Wegovy?
The Wegovy label does not list banned foods. These are the ones most often worth limiting, with the joint advisory’s support where it applies:
- Large or high-fat meals. The advisory suggests avoiding them to reduce nausea and diarrhea. Fried food, fatty cuts of meat, creamy pasta and fast food are common culprits.
- Very sweet foods and drinks. Soda, candy and desserts crowd out protein when you can only eat a little.
- Alcohol. The advisory recommends minimal alcohol and says it may worsen nausea and reflux.
- Eating past fullness. With slower stomach emptying, “just one more bite” can tip you into nausea.
How do I reduce nausea and constipation on Wegovy?
For nausea:
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals. The advisory says these may help when hunger is low.
- Eat slowly and stop at the first sign of fullness.
- Keep bland foods on hand, such as saltine crackers (5 crackers, 63 Calories, FDC 172746), plain rice, toast or a banana.
- Sip fluids between meals instead of drinking a lot with food.
The FDA label warns that dehydration from nausea, vomiting or diarrhea has been linked to kidney injury. If you cannot keep fluids down, call your prescriber.
For constipation, add fiber slowly and drink more water as you do. Raspberries (1 cup, 8.0 g fiber, FDC 167755), pears (1 medium, 5.5 g, FDC 169118), black beans (1 cup, 15.0 g, FDC 173735) and prunes (5 pitted, 3.4 g, FDC 168162) are good options. The advisory mentions prunes and other dried fruit specifically.
What does a Wegovy diet plan look like for one day?
One example of a day of small, protein-first meals in US measures, with numbers from USDA FoodData Central. Adjust portions to your appetite and your care team’s advice.
- Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs and 1/2 cup raspberries. About 13 g protein, 176 Calories.
- Snack: 6 oz plain nonfat Greek yogurt. 17.3 g protein, 100 Calories.
- Lunch: 1 cup edamame with 1/2 cup steamed broccoli. About 20 g protein, 215 Calories.
- Snack: 1 medium pear and 1 tablespoon peanut butter (16 g, FDC 172470). About 4 g protein, 197 Calories.
- Dinner: 3 oz baked salmon with 1/2 cup black beans. About 26 g protein, 289 Calories.
That gives roughly 80 g of protein and about 980 Calories from these foods, before cooking oil, bread or drinks. Most adults will need more energy than this, so use the macro calculator for a starting target and check it with your prescriber. Never go below 1,200 Calories a day without medical supervision.
If you want to check that small meals are still hitting your protein goal, logging helps. Calo AI is a free calorie tracker with photo, voice and text logging, and our GLP-1 food tracker comparison looks at the choices.
Is the advice different in Australia?
The food advice is the same. Australian availability can change, so ask your GP or pharmacist about Wegovy’s current status. Australians who prefer metric and kilojoules can see a sample plan with kJ in our Mounjaro meal plan. Ask your GP or pharmacist about availability.
Who should get personal advice first?
Talk with your prescriber or a registered dietitian before changing your diet if you:
- Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. The Wegovy label says it may cause fetal harm and should be stopped when pregnancy is recognized for weight-loss use.
- Have a history of an eating disorder. The joint advisory notes restrictive eating disorders are a general contraindication to GLP-1 use.
- Are under 18. Wegovy is approved for some adolescents, but their nutrition needs should be set by their care team.
- Have kidney disease, diabetes or gallbladder problems.
Practical takeaway
- Protein first at every small meal.
- Limit large, greasy meals, sweets and alcohol.
- Sip fluids all day and build fiber up slowly.
- Add strength training if your care team agrees.
- Report severe or lasting side effects to your prescriber, and never change doses alone.
